چکیده
Penicillin was discovered less than a century ago 1 and since then millions of lives have been saved with the use of antibiotics. 2 Today, antibiotics are among the most frequently prescribed medications in healthcare. 3-5 Even though antibiotics have numerous benefits, they can also have negative consequences that lead to other health related problems. An example of this is Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection that leads to Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD). Since the first reported case of CDAD in 1978, this antibiotic associated bacteria has become a major public health threat as was identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 6,7

Background & Aims: Clostridium difficile has been identified as a pathogen in antibiotic associated diarrhea (AAD), pseudomembranous colitis and also nosocomial diarrhea. The present study was performed to find the prevalence of toxigenic strains of C .difficile isolated from diarrhea patients hospitalized in Tehran hospitals. Method: A total of 98 fecal samples obtained during July to December...

INTRODUCTION Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is common and frequently more severe in hospitalized elderly adults. It can lead to increased use of healthcare resources. We estimated the cost-effectiveness of a fermented milk (FM) with probiotic in preventing AAD and in particular Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). METHODS Clinical effectiveness data and cost information wer...

متن کاملEffectiveness of probiotic in preventing and treating antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and/or Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea in patients with spinal cord injury: a protocol of systematic review of randomised controlled trials
BACKGROUND Probiotics may prevent antibiotic-associated and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea (AAD/CDAD). Many spinal cord injury centre (SCIC) practitioners consider probiotics generically and may not realise that efficacy can be strain-, dose- and disease-specific. In order to confirm these effects and fully evaluate the extent of probiotic effectiveness in these patients, a systemat...
